History
In 1865, William S. Marvel Sr. arrived in Delmar and became the town’s first undertaker. At the time, Delmar was a growing railroad community, and William also served as a blacksmith, cabinetmaker, and coffin builder. He later moved the funeral home into what had once been Dr. Ellegood’s residence and medical office. The business was eventually handed down through the family—to William’s son and daughter-in-law, William S. Marvel Jr. and Bertha, and later to the third generation, William S. Marvel III and Charles Marvel.
Meanwhile, William "Bill" Matthews Short Jr. was born on April 17, 1943, in Milton, Delaware. The son of a funeral director, he grew up living above his family’s funeral home and developed a deep interest in the profession. Bill began his career working in the mortuary at Dover Air Force Base and helping with the family business. In 1968, he married Sarah E. Penuel, and in 1972, the couple purchased the Marvel Funeral Home, moving to Delmar to begin their own chapter of service. Together, they worked to restore the home’s Victorian charm, and they renovated an adjoining pre-1865 building—once a pharmacy—to serve as the casket and vault display area.
On October 1, 2005, their daughter, Amy Short Jewell, and her husband, Tom, became the new owners of the funeral home and crematories. Both are graduates of the Community College of Baltimore County with degrees in Mortuary Science. In honor of Amy’s parents, Sarah and the late Bill Short, they chose to continue under the name “Short Funeral Home,” preserving the family’s legacy of care and service that has endured for generations.
Though much has changed over the years, one thing remains constant—Short Funeral Home is dedicated to honoring the traditions of the past while helping families create meaningful memories for the future.
