William V. "Tom" Stevens, Jr., 80, of Delmar, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2016 at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Delaware. He was born on November 7, 1935 in Washington D.C. a son of the late William V. Stevens, Sr. and Anna Marie (Gallagher) Stevens. After graduating from high school, Tom played in the Washington Redskins band. Throughout the years he remained an avid fan of the Redskins and the Orioles. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Tom worked at the Hyattsville City Police Department for 27 years, retiring as sergeant. In his free time, he enjoyed his work as a brick layer for his father at Stevens Construction and later working for himself. He loved watching old westerns that starred John Wayne. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Delois C. Stevens; a daughter, Theresa Lees (Edward) of Delmar; a son, William V. Stevens, III (Sharon) of Edgewater, Maryland; three grandchildren, James Lees, Lauren and Megan Stevens; a brother, James Stevens of Silver Spring, Florida; sisters, Louise Sandridge of Greenwood, West Virginia and Kathleen Huffman of Lanham, Maryland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William R. Stevens. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at the Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove Street in Delmar, followed by a funeral service beginning at 5:00 p.m. In memory of Mr. Stevens, contributions may be sent to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
