Virginia M. "Jinny" McDermott (nee Vogt) died peacefully on February 23, 2013 of a dissected aorta. She was born November 28, 1924 in Appleton, Wis. Her parents were Philipp Vogt and Ida Vogt (nee Heise). She was preceded in death by John F. McDermott IV, her husband of 57 years. She is survived by three children John F. McDermott V and wife Sally (nee Lehman) of State College, PA, Anne M. McDermott of Hyattsville, MD, and Martin K. McDermott and wife Dianne (nee Yi) of Highland, MD, two granddaughters Emily E. Dykstra and husband Douglas Dykstra of Bloomington, IN and Molly E. McDermott and husband Matthew Shumar of Columbus, OH, and two great-granddaughters Sophie E. Dykstra and Grace E. Dykstra. She received a B.S. from PA College for Women (now Chatham College) and became a registered nurse in 1947 in Pittsburgh. She worked as Head Nurse in Allegheny General Hospital and later became an instructor in the School of Nursing. She was a member of the American Nurses Association and PA League for Nursing. After raising her family she returned to hospital staff nursing and continued graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University, receiving a Master of Education in 1970. She taught nursing at Presbyterian-University Hospital, University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University in the 1970's. After retirement, she coordinated and trained volunteers and developed support programs of the Reach to Recovery Rehabilitation program of the American Cancer Society's Greater Pittsburgh Unit, CanSurmount, and received numerous awards. She was a member of the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh for 20 years, and loved singing in community choruses in the Pittsburgh area as well as N.C. She and her husband retired to Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC in 1995 where she lived for 16 years. Six years after John's death, she relocated to Methodist Manor House in Seaford, DE in 2011. She enjoyed needlework, scrapbooking, genealogy, and jigsaw puzzles. A private interment at gravesite will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, St Louis, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
