Virginia Fitzgerald Thompson, 99, of Delmar, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at her daughter's home, where she had lived for the past several years. She was born in Delmar on May 6, 1922, a daughter of the late Earl and Gladys Parsons Fitzgerald. Virginia worked many years as an administrative assistant for the former R.E. Powell Discountland clothing store in Salisbury and Laurel. She was an avid reader and loved puzzles, traveling and most importantly, caring for her family. She is survived by a daughter, Teri Brittingham and her fiancé, Gary McMullen of Delmar; grandchildren, John W. Owens (Pat), James L. Owens (Bridget), John A. Townsend, Jr. (Amy), and David L. Townsend (Angel); 15 great grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lewis Halsey Thompson, who passed in 1998; a daughter, Mary Louise Thompson Owens; a grandson, William Thomas Owens, Jr.; and siblings, Richard Fitzgerald, Francis Fitzgerald, Linwood Fitzgerald, Bobby Fitzgerald, and Bertha Brooks. Funeral services for Mrs. Thompson will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. Father Mike Lokey will officiate. Interment will follow at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriot's Way, Milford, Delaware 19963. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
