It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Virgil James Wilson, who left us peacefully on Monday, May 25, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on June 29, 1948, in Delmar, Delaware, Virgil was a son of the late William and Marjorie Wilson.
Virgil was a proud and hardworking man, beginning his journey in his early years by cutting grass for many residents in Delmar and later working at Nichols Department Store in Fruitland. He found his true calling as a forklift operator, a role he devoted himself to for 29 years while working at Dupont Company, BFI, and Eastern Waste. His family and friends will remember him for his big heart and unwavering willingness to help anyone in need.An avid enthusiast of yard sales, Virgil enjoyed the thrill of finding treasures and spending quality time with his loved ones. He treasured his morning routine, enjoying two or three cups of coffee with each meal, and delighted in joking and carrying on with his nieces and nephews. Virgil's warm spirit and loving nature will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Wilson, his son Andrew Jestice, stepson Jeffrey Maddox, stepdaughter Lindsay Lynch (Saemus), his sisters Janice Cannon and Bonnie Quillen, his loving grandchildren Simon Maddox, Anthony Maddox (Monica), Dylan Thomas Williams, Emma Catherine Williams, and Amelia Lynch, as well as his great-grandson Mack Williams. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Wanda Carmean and Marjorie Ann Wilson, and his brother William Wilson.
Virgil's family would like to extend a special thanks to the memory unit at Lofland Park Center, where he expressed his love and appreciation by saying, "I love you all" to the staff.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am at Short Funeral Home on Monday, June 1, 2026. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Pittsville Cemetery.
