DELMAR- Virgie R. Nichols, age 93, of Delmar, died Friday, June 24, 2016 at Anchorage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Salisbury with her family by her side. She was born April 2, 1923 in Fruitland, a daughter of the late John and Annie Owens. In her early days Virgie learned the value of hard work. Whether it was helping her husband on the farm, serving students in the Delmar cafeteria or pressing clothes at various garment factories, she always gave her best and inspired those around her to do the same. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Delmar. She will be remembered as a wonderful cook, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved the outdoors and cut grass and walked three miles a day up until she was 90 years old. She is survived by a daughter, Connie E. Massey of Willards; a son, Tucker Ellis and wife, Bonnie of Delmar; grandchildren, Lisa Dipaolo (Tony), Jackie Ford, Jr. (Lynn), Freddy Massey (Linda) and Donald T. Ellis, II (Karen); six great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; a step son, William Nichols and his wife, Bobbi and their family, of Delmar; a step daughter, Chandra Lucksho of Delmar; and many special nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands, Thomas E. Ellis, Levin Lowe and George Nichols; brothers, Russell, John and Floyd Owens; and a sister, Dorothy Owens. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 27, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where a visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00. The Reverend Barry Devine will officiate. Interment will follow the services at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to First Baptist Church of Delmar, P.O. Box 200, Delmar, DE 19940.
