Obituary

Thomas G. Young, fondly known as "Tommy", age 90, died Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Delmar Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born August 24, 1924 in Onancock, Virginia, a son of the late Jesse and Minnie Young. Tommy graduated from Delmar High School in 1942 and has ever since been one of Delmar's biggest fan and supporters of the football team and all sports programs. Following graduation he attended Salisbury Teachers College. He retired in 1984 after many years of service as a social worker for Delaware Health and Human Services in Georgetown. He was a gifted writer, and combined with his love for sports, worked as a sports columnist for many years for the old Bi-State Weekly, the Salisbury Times and the Seaford & Laurel Star. Tommy was always very active in the community and served as Past President of the Delmar Kiwanis, Lt Governor Capitol District of Kiwanis International and was a member of Salisbury Elks Lodge 817 and the Salisbury Moose Lodge. He was also a vital member of the roundtable group at the Railroad Café in Delmar. Golf was a favorite past time for Tommy and he enjoyed competing in MSGA events for many years. Tommy's love of sports started at an early age and baseball was his first love. Several years ago he was proudly inducted into the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame where he also served on the board of directors. After his playing days he became one of the first coaches in the Delmar Little League. In his younger days he enjoyed officiating youth football and baseball games. He was a lifetime, avid fan of the San Francisco Giants and stuck with them through the good times and bad. His other love was his family and he was a proud husband, father and grandfather. As his children and grandchildren began playing sports through little league and high school, he never missed a game. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Diana L. Young; daughters, Susan (Johnny) Layton of Delmar and Margot (Alex) Lynch of Laurel; a son Thomas Young, Jr. of Clermont, Florida; grandsons, Jonathan (Crystal) Layton of Delmar, Brock (Daisy) Layton of Delmar and Lucas (Lisa) Lynch of Mardela Springs; great grandchildren, Alyssa, Christian, Zachary and Somer Layton, Bashia and Ethan Layton and Casey R. Lynch; a sister, Martha Gertrude Gibson of Freemont, California; and brothers-in-law, Ronald (Cindy) LaPorte of Bridgeville and Bruce (Maureen) LaPorte of Wilmington. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson, Casey Alex Lynch, a sister, Ruth Schrier, half-brother, Jesse Young, Jr. and a half-sister, Agnes Moore. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where a visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00. The Reverend Barbara Wilson will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Delmar Kiwanis, P.O.
