Obituary

Steven "Gary" Harrington, 62, of Laurel, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, February 5, 2010. His beloved and longtime canine companion, "Champ" was, as always, by his side. Gary was born and raised in Salisbury, a son of the late Merrill Harrington, Sr. and Beatrice Workman Harrington. Gary spent his childhood and teenage years in Salisbury, where he loved to meet his friends at the former Oaks Drive Inn. He won countless trophies and awards for his achievements in go-cart racing and was known far and wide for always having the cleanest, fastest, and best looking vehicles, trucks and boats on Delmarva. He was a tractor- trailer driver and was a long time friend and employee of Phil Banks and his chain of Banks Convenience Stores. He was also a close friend and long time employee of Melvin Joseph, helping to build what is now the Delaware International Motor Speedway, the "Monster Mile" and was the inspiration for the handle and logo "White Lightning" at the Speedway. He is remembered for his interests and talents in hot rods, high performance engines, NASCAR, music and most of all, for his devotion to his family and friends. Anyone who knew Gary knew of his deep devotion and special bond he shared with his daughter and best friend, Tanya. He was a loyal friend and neighbor who increasingly loved being at home with his family and dog and enjoying life. Gary is survived by his beloved daughter, Tanya Harrington Callaway and her companion, Jason Dolby of Laurel; his beloved granddaughter, Morgan Brittani Callaway; his fiancé' and long time, loving companion, Dawn Bialk of Laurel; a beloved sister, Jeanette White of Salisbury; a beloved brother, Merrill "Buddy" Harrington, Jr. of Delmar; a former son-in-law, Wayne Callaway of Laurel; and a step-daughter, Sherry Hastings of Bridgeville. He is also survived by a niece, Linda Guthrie and her family of Texas; and nephews, Bruce Harrington of Salisbury and Eric Harrington and his family of Camden, Delaware. A memorial service for Gary's family and friends will be held at a later date due to inclement weather. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
