Samuel "Sam" L. Young, Sr., 79, of Seaford, died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. He was born in Virginia on December 31, 1929, a son of the late Levin Young and Beaulah (Wheatley) Meyers. Sam served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. Always a hard worker, he enjoyed his work as a truck driver for George & Lynch in Dover. He loved the outdoors and fishing was his passion. He is survived by three sons, Samuel L. Young, Jr. of Ashville, NC, Charles L. Young of Salisbury and Shaun A. Young of Seaford; four grandchildren, Shirley Poltz, Kaitlynn Young, Samantha Young and Max Young; and six great grandchildren, Jeremiah, Janelle, Jacob, Justin, Jordan and Jayden. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann (Ellis) Young; a daughter, Dawn Young; three brothers, Gene Young, Preston Young and Charles L. Young, who was killed in battle during World War II; and a sister. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Short Funeral Home, Delmar, where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Reverend Roland Tice will officiate. Interment at St. Stephen's Cemetery Park will be private at a later date.
