Sadie Dryden, longtime resident of Snow Hill, died Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at Hartley Hall Nursing Home in Pocomoke, just four months short of her 100th birthday. She was preceded in death by her husband Afton Dryden of Snow Hill, her brother William Kelly of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and a sister, Alice Hall of Snow Hill. She is survived by a son, Dr. Edgar Dryden (Renee) of Tucson, AZ; a daughter, Ruth Young (Wayne) of Snow Hill; five grandchildren, Dr. Jonathan Dryden (Christine) of Lakewood, OH, Dr. Stephanie Dryden (Robert Boerth) of Oviedo, FL, Nathan Dryden of Salt Lake City, UT, Kathey J. Larger (Douglas), and David Wayne Young (Kim) of Snow Hill, as well as eight great grandchildren. Sadie lived a long, full and successful life as a devoted wife, loving mother and master of domestic arts and social crafts. She was a farmer, seamstress, waitress, interior decorator, dental assistant, and, during her later years, a beloved and devoted caretaker, known to many as "Miss Sadie." Whatever the job, she did it well, taking satisfaction in her skills as well as in the results. And, as her children well remember, she expected no less from those around her. Like most of us, she appreciated having her talents recognized and acknowledged. For example, she fully enjoyed her local celebrity, when in September 2002 she became known on the lower shore as the lady whose house blew up. As she told an employee in a store in Salisbury, she took the event as a sign that the Lord had other work for her to do, and she was determined to do it well. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2013 at Spence Baptist Church in Snow Hill. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The Reverend Ken Elligson will officiate. Interment will follow the services at Whatcoat U.M. Church Cemetery in Snow Hill. In memory of Mrs. Dryden, memorial contributions may be sent to Spence Baptist Church, 4824 Paw Paw Creek Road, Snow Hill, MD 21863. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
