Ruth E. Humphries, 90, of Delmar, died Sunday, July 6, 2008 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. She was born September 3, 1917 in Newport News, Virginia, a daughter of the late John D. Elliott and Elizabeth Warrington Elliott, and the late Frances Elliott, who was like a mother to her. Ruth worked many years as a secretary at the Beebe School of Nursing in Lewes and also worked hard as a homemaker, wife and mother. She was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church of Salisbury, where she played piano and organ for many years and also recently worked as a Teacher's Aide in the 1st and 2nd grades at Faith Baptist Christian School. Ruth had a special love for her family and cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, which is proven by the family photos that cover the walls of her home. She is remembered by her family as an excellent cook. Chocolate chip cookies were one of her many specialties. She enjoyed doing handiwork, knitting, crocheting and cross-stitching and sharing her works with her family. Many of her family members treasure the afghans and other handmade items that she made for them as a special gift. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading, especially her daily Bible readings, and was known to keep daily journals, which date back for many years. She was an avid fan of her Baltimore Orioles and Duke Basketball team. She is survived by 4 children, Randall Humphries and his wife Margaret of Hammonton, NJ, Daniel Humphries and his wife Maggie of Folsom, PA, Jacqueline Gage and her husband Robert of Delmar, DE and Edwin Humphries and his wife Traci of Rehoboth Beach, DE; 7 grandchildren, Dean Humphries and his wife Robin, Mike Gage and his wife Lilly, Brian Humphries, Steven Gage and his wife Cheryl, Christopher Humphries, Wesley Humphries and Troy Humphries; and 4 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Roland M. Elliott and his wife Dot of Lincoln University, PA, a sister, June Duffy and her husband John of Aldon, PA, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur W. Humphries, who passed May 25, 2000. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home, Delmar, where family and friends may call from 12:00 to 1:00. The Reverend Robert C. Reinert will officiate. Interment will follow in Bethel Cemetery in Lewes.
