DELMAR- Ross Marvel Smith, 90, of Delmar, died Friday, March 16, 2012 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. He was born April 8, 1921 in Georgetown, a son of the late Rodney A. and Mary A. (Powell) Smith. Ross was born and raised on the family farm where he learned the value of hard work and found his love of the outdoors. After high school he proudly served his country in the US Air Force where he learned to be a bombardier navigator. He was a long time, active member and lay leader of the former Mt. Olive United Methodist Church in Delmar, which later merged with St. Stephen's United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Delmar Masonic Lodge 201, AF &AM, where he served as past worshipful master, the Order of the Eastern Star, Adah Chapter, where he served as past worthy patron and the NUR Temple in Wilmington. After returning from the Air Force he went to work for John Hitchens at Delmarva Asphalt, where he worked a number of years. In 1967 he purchased the company with a friend and renamed it Delmarva Paving and worked until his retirement in 1984. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, whom he married January 23, 1942, Alma Lee (Hearn) Smith; a daughter, Mary Jo Moore of Delmar; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Anne "Frannie" Smith, who passed in 2005; 2 sisters, Harriet T. Smith and Frances Smith; and a brother, Hugh P. Smith. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call from, 1:00 to 2:00. The Reverend Lori Twilley will officiate. Interment will follow the services at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Coastal Hospice, P.O.
