Robert P. Adkins, age 72, of Hebron, died Sunday, February 18, 2007, as a result of injuries sustained from an automobile accident. He was born on January 5, 1935 in Salisbury, a son of the late Oscar Thomas Adkins and Edith Mae Phippin Adkins. Bob graduated from the Hebron School. After graduation, he joined the National Guard where he proudly served for 40 years. He was an active member and Retired 1st Sgt. of the 115th Military Police Battalion Infantry Regiment of the MD National Guard. He worked for 12 years in shipping & receiving at the Manhattan Shirt Factory before going to work at DuPont in Seaford. He retired from DuPont in 1992, after 29 years of service, as a Computer Technician. He served many years on the Hebron Town Council and where he was Assistant Secretary/Treasurer. As a member of the "Pinbusters" bowling team in the Seaford Senior Bowling League, he cherished spending time with his friends from DuPont. He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 64 in Salisbury and the National Rifle Association. He was loved the outdoors and was passionate about North American game hunting, fishing and camping and loved to travel in his quest for Elk, Deer and other large game. He is survived by his wife of over 53 years, Elnora Layfield Adkins; 2 sons, Gene Adkins and his wife Donna of Seneca, SC and Donald Adkins of Hebron; 2 daughters, Lisa Bishop and her husband Joe, Jr. of Hebron and Dana Richardson and her husband, Lee of Willards; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Adkins and his wife Edith of Pittsville; dear friends, Bob Merriman and his wife Judy of Hebron and Jr. Perdue and his wife Pat of Whitesville; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving him are his three dogs that he called Daddy's babies, "Dunn", "Missy" and "Chewy." In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Adkins and a sister, Peggy Bozman. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove Street, Delmar, and also from 1:00 to 2:00 on Thursday, followed by funeral services at 2:00 at the funeral home. The Reverend Jerry Denton will officiate.
