Robert "Bob" Howard Owens, 87, of Sharptown, MD, passed away June 12, 2011 after a long illness. Mr. Owens was born February 1, 1924 in Sharptown and was the son of the late Glen and Pauline Howard Owens. A brother, Gene W. Owens preceded him in death. Mr. Owens graduated from Sharptown High School in 1941. It was in Sharptown that he met the love of his life, Georgine McDade Owens. They were married September 19, 1943 and celebrated 62 years of marriage in 2005. Mrs. Owens preceded her husband in death on August 6, 2006. After high school, he worked for the Glenn L. Martin Airplane plant in Baltimore until he joined the Army in 1943 and was stationed in California where he worked in the amphibian tank training division. After the Army, Mr. Owens was a store owner in Columbia, DE and Sharptown, MD. He later went to work for Chesapeake Corporation of Virginia and retired in 1989 after 37 years. Mr. Owens and his family also lived in Pocomoke, MD for 22 years where he was the Area Woodlands Manager for the company until his retirement. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Owens spent a brief time living in Cambridge, MD before returning to his beloved Sharptown in 1997 where he was living at the time of his death. He did enjoy spending the last 2 winters in Herndon with his daughter, Lisa and her family. Mr. Owens was active in many organizations including the American Legion, Lions Club, and Masonic Lodge. He was a Past Master of the lodge, a charter member of Post 218 in Sharptown, and President of the Lions Club. He was also town commissioner and treasurer of Sharptown. He was a member of Mount Vernon Methodist Church in Sharptown, MD and Salem Methodist Church in Pocomoke, MD. He held many positions in each church, taught Sunday school and was a lay minister. He is survived by two daughters, Victoria Owens Hubbert and her husband Sewell of Cambridge, MD and Lisa Owens Browning and her husband Michael of Herndon, VA. He was proud of his 3 grandchildren, Robbie Hastings of Sharptown, MD and his wife, Kelly and Kyle and Connor Browning of Herndon, VA. He is also survived by one great-grandson, Robert Hastings of Sharptown and 2 step-great-grandchildren, Josh and Kenna Fleming of Sharptown. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and loyal friends. A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 16 at Mount Vernon Methodist Church in Sharptown from 6 -8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 17 also at Mount Vernon at 2 pm. Interment will be immediately following at the Sharptown Firemen's Cemetery. Mr. Owens was an avid dog lover and in the last years of his life took a great interest in House With a Heart Senior Pet Sanctuary.
