It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Thurlow Dorrell, who left us peacefully on Friday, March 14, 2025, at his home in Delmar. Born on April 19, 1944, in Salisbury, MD, Robert touched the lives of everyone he met throughout his remarkable journey of 80 years. Growing up in a lively household filled with five brothers and four sisters, Robert learned early on the importance of family and community. He cherished his roots in West Virginia, where he was baptized at the Davin Baptist Church by his beloved Pastor Johnny Hatfield and his brother, David Hatfield-who he considered as close as family. Robert had a zest for life that shone through in everything he did. He loved traveling, exploring new places, and spending quality time with his daughters-Tracie, Christa, and Melissa-who were his pride and joy. He was known for his generosity, always providing for his family and showering them with love. In his quieter moments, Robert found joy in watching the Delmar Christmas parade, where he happily contributed trophies to honor the participants. He was an avid motorcycle rider and found thrill in the wind on his face. A collector at heart, Robert had an impressive array of antiques, coins, currency, and all sorts of interesting items that he loved sharing stories about. Robert spent his early years as a truck driver for Rantz Trucking before shifting gears to a fulfilling career as a family court clerk. He later dedicated 25 years of service as a manager at Johnsons OK Used Cars in Delmar, where he made lasting friendships and memories. He was also a passionate fan of Dale Earnhardt and enjoyed sharing his enthusiasm for racing with those around him. Robert is survived by his three beloved daughters, Melissa Knox, Christa Penuel (Bill) and Tracie Robin Dorrell, who will carry his memory in their hearts forever. He is also survived by a sister, Jenny L. Cary; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Casper Dorrell, Sr. and Mattie Elizabeth (Carver) Dorrell; and siblings, James Casper Dorrell, Jr., Clyde W. Dorrell, Emma "Peggy" H. Brinson, Barbara E. Patrick, Francine J. Williams, George Dorrell, and John Dorrell. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 11am at St. Stephens Cemetery Park in Delmar. Friends and family are invited to join us as we celebrate Robert's life and honor the legacy he leaves behind. Immediately following the service, family and friends are invited to Camelot Hall at St. Stephen's Church in Delmar for a luncheon. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
