Obituary

Dr. Richard H. Long, 75, of Laurel, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. He was born on May 8, 1941 in Griffin, Georgia, a son of the late Mr. And Mrs. Horace "Kingfish" Long. Dr. Long graduated from the University of Georgia Veterinary School in 1965. Years later he opened Pet Medical Center in Delmar in 1985. He enjoyed many years of working with animals, retiring in 2007. He was past president of the Delaware Veterinary Medical Association for many years, and was awarded the Delaware Veterinarian of the Year in 2004 and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. He is survived by a son, Kevin Long of Laurel; step-daughter, Emily Fantis and her husband Andy of Laurel; step-son, Brian Workman and his wife Teena of Salisbury; grandsons, Aristidis Fantis and Adam Workman; and his furry kids, Annie, Pedro, Goober and Boo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Andrea D. Long; and a brother, Laverne Long. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2016 and from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at the Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove Street in Delmar. A funeral service will begin on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at St. Stephens Cemetery in Delmar. In memory of Dr. Long, contributions may be sent to the Wicomico County Humane Society, 5130 Citation Drive, Salisbury, MD 21804. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
