Obituary

OCEAN PINES- Richard Dean Field (Rick) passed away in Berlin, Maryland, on May 10, 2013, at the age of 73 after valiantly battling Agent Orange-related cancer for fifteen years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Dean Field, Jr. and Erma Bontz Field of Washington, D.C., and his grandson, Cody Dean Field of Modesto, CA. Rick is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Yvonne Hawkins Field. They were married at the Washington National Cathedral on May 16, 1964. He is much beloved by his two children, Tracy Field Adler and her husband, Robert, of Baltimore, MD, and James Dean Field of Modesto, CA, and his wife, Alicia, and six grandchildren: Emily, Caitlin, and Hayley Adler of Baltimore, MD, and Anthony Salpino, Jonathan Salpino, and Maeci Field of Modesto, CA. Rick was born in Washington, D.C., on September 28, 1939. He graduated from Sherwood High School in 1957, attended Montgomery Junior College, University of Maryland, and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Chapman College. In 1960, he entered the United States Air Force through the Harlingen Cadet Program in Harlingen, Texas, and became an Electronic Warfare Officer on a SAC B-52 crew. Rick's first alert was the Cuban Missile crisis. His three tours of duty in Vietnam earned him numerous honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross with nine oak clusters. He was stationed at SAC bases Seymour Johnson AFB, NC, Columbus AFB, MS, and Mather AFB, CA, Major Field retired from the USAF as a B-52 flight instructor at Castle AFB, California in 1980. He then began his second career as a high school mathematics teacher, first at Merced High School's East Campus, then at Golden Valley High School. Rick enjoyed supporting his family's numerous theatrical endeavors and provided behind-the-scenes technical expertise. Rick and Yvonne enjoyed traveling and retired full time to Ocean Pines, Maryland. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. with Father David Dingwall officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Inurnment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
