Obituary

DELMAR- Rebekah D. Sturgis, 83, of Delmar and Salisbury died Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. She was born April 29, 1932 in Buffalo, New York, a daughter of the late Cyrus L. Dirickson and Frances H. Dirickson. In 1946 she moved to the Eastern Shore with her family and finished high school at Wicomico High School, graduating with the class of 1950. She completed two years of college at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro before marrying Lt. Jack H. Sturgis of Eastville, Virginia and Salisbury. After raising her children, she attended Salisbury State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies and Masters in Education. She then entered the workforce as an addictions counselor and ended her working career as an administrator. After 34 years of marriage she divorced, remaining good friends with her ex-husband until his death in 1998. Her primary interests were music, the visual arts and horses. She played piano and organ, painted and photographed. During her thirties she was an active horse-woman, riding with various organizations. She is survived by three sons and their wives, Carroll and Sandra Sturgis of Crisfield, Hunter Scott and Linda Sturgis of Milford and John and Laura Sturgis of Harleysville, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Jessica Koltuk and husband, Mustafa and Kristina Arndt and husband, Christopher, Robert Sturgis and Abigail Sturgis; great grandchildren, Christopher and Zeynep; a sister, Marjorie Ressler of Camden, Delaware; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Cyrus B. and William Dirickson. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 2:00 to 3:00. Pastor Lebron Palmer will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Delmar Public Library, 101 Bi-state Boulevard, Delmar, DE 19940. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home, Delmar.
