Raymond D. Carey of Fruitland, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and patriot, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2024, at his home, with his beloved wife Judy by his side. He was born October 8, 1938, in Fruitland, the son of the late William G. and Minerva (Wilson) Carey. Ray graduated from Wicomico High School with the class of 1956 and received degrees from El Paso Community College in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Wor-Wic Community College. Ray proudly served his country in the US Air Force, 4 years active duty including overseas followed by 2 years in the Reserves. Law enforcement was one of Ray's passions and from 1963 to 1968 he served as a deputy sheriff in Colorado Springs before working security at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs where he often had the privilege of protecting the President, Vice-President and other high-ranking officials. After returning home to the Eastern Shore, he began working as a correctional officer at ECI, and later at Poplar Hill, from where he retired as a SGT. He was a proud member of the Wicomico County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #101. Ray loved sports and was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens and was an avid golfer who worked many years as a marshal and starter at Nutter's Crossing in Salisbury. He also served in many capacities with the Fruitland Little League. Ray was also passionate about his faith and was an active, long-time member of Fruitland Christian Church, where he served in many capacities through the years. He will be remembered and missed by many at church, especially the children who always looked to him for a warm smile and a piece of candy. Ray's servant's heart led him to serve on the Fruitland City Council for 18 years. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judith Bussells Carey; son, David Carey and wife, Mary of Colorado; stepson, Richard Timmons, Jr. and wife, Lisa of Salisbury; grandchildren, Bryce Carey of Colorado, Dallin Carey and wife, Aubrey of Montana, Janelle Carey-Mengel and husband, Brad of Colorado and Zachary Timmons and wife, Samantha of Eden; and great grandchildren, Hyrum, Vienna, Hailee and Averi. He is also survived by many cousins and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Carey; step-son, David Timmons; brothers, William, Wayne and twin brother, Ralph; and a sister, Sylvia. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Fruitland Christian Church, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury. Pastor Shawn Short will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fruitland Christian Church, P.O.
