Obituary

Phillip A. Figgs, 76, of Delmar, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 9, 2022, at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury.Phil was born in Salisbury, the son of the late Richard S. and Helen (Elliott) Figgs. After high school, Phil proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After his return home, he began working for the USPS and retired as a window clerk at the Delmar Post Office after many years. Family was everything to Phil and more than anything, he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Phil was known for his laughter and loved to retell funny, family memories with his unique, expressive animation that would have everyone laughing hysterically. The more everyone laughed, the more he entertained. His empathetic heart was remarkable as he felt the pain, joy, disappointment, fear, any and all emotions of those he loved. He not only matched his loved ones' feelings, somehow, he felt them even more deeply. His family has never known a more empathetic heart. His love and compassion extended beyond family to animals of all kinds. Phil's fish tanks and pond were well known in the town of Delmar. He cared for beautiful, exotic fish that he treated like royalty. When one of his fish would die, his whole family was saddened, because he cared so deeply for each and every one. It was the norm to find large, exotic fish in the freezer in his home, because he just couldn't bear to say goodbye after one passed. He worked to keep the birds in his yard well fed and could name every kind. He knew their migration patterns and their favorite treats. Phil loved dogs and cats to the point that he would let his pal, BW, a feral cat, in his house to escape the cold. He always wanted updates on all the great-grand dogs and cats. Even while in the hospital, too weak to say much at all, he would say things like, "Give my love to Dave (the doodle)." There was never a heart more pure than his. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Ann Johnson and husband, Cale of Delmar; grandchildren, Kenzie Williams and husband Jordan, Kelsey Johnson, Kaylin Johnson, Seth Phillip Figgs and fiancé Sarah Staton, Luke Figgs, Cassie Figgs and Ellie Figgs; twin great granddaughters, Nollie and Nova Figgs; sisters, Doris Pusey and Teresa McTernan and husband John; and many nieces and nephews. Phil, also, leaves behind his loving companion, Cheryl Twilley, who brought him much joy, love, and comfort, even in his last moments here on earth. They shared a special bond and were blessed to have found each other after both suffering the losses of their beloved spouses. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Elizabeth "Lib" Ann (Smart) Figgs, who passed in 2008; and his only son, Lonnie Figgs, who just recently passed in October, 2021. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.shortfh.com.
