Obituary

Phillip (Phil) Lane Dunn, 71, of Laurel passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. He was born on October 21, 1952 in Salisbury, Maryland, a son of the late, Thelma Gertrude (Layfield) Dunn and Oscar Straughn Dunn. In his early years, he attended Prince Street School and graduated from Bennett Jr. Sr. High School in 1970. Then he pursued a degree at Del-Tech Community College. Throughout his schooling, he was an active member of the Bennett Marching Band as a trumpet player and played baseball and slow-pitch softball as a catcher. Phil spent his career working as a refrigeration mechanic for Fruehauf and Thermo King. He started as parts manager in 1975, then moved to Thermo King technician a couple years later. Eventually, Phillip attained the position of master technician before leaving the company after 20 years of service. He later worked as a salesperson for Advanced and NAPA Auto Parts in Delmar for a number of years where customers would request his assistance due to his superior expertise. After retirement, he worked as a parking lot attendant for the Delmarva Shorebirds in Salisbury, Md. and at Bergey's Truck Center in Delmar, Md. He enjoyed cooking: the best macaroni cheese, potato salad, and baking Christmas cookies. Most importantly, was his love for his family, he enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters and attending their dance recitals and sporting events. Moreover, Phil was known for his love and ability for fixing things. He had a love for cars and could fix anything that had a motor. Over the years, he belonged to the Late Great Chevy Car Club where he enjoyed showing his 1970 Monte Carlo. He was a member for 30 years and held the office of Treasurer. He earned the honor of Lifetime Member for his commitment and dedication to the club. When he wasn't working on a project out in his shop, he was watching football, baseball, or Nascar. His favorite teams included the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Orioles. One attribute that will be remembered about Phil was his kindness towards others. He never knew a stranger, and he took it as a privilege to help someone in need. Phil was faithful in donating blood to the blood bank yearly, and volunteering for the Salvation Army as a bell ringer for the Red Kettle Campaign. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Anne Teagle and her husband Eric; granddaughters, Annika Elizabeth Teagle and Alayna Addison Teagle; brother, Gilbert Dunn and his wife Joyce; sister, Rebecca Dunn; sister-in-law, Ellen Dunn; and nieces and nephews, Jessica Dunn-Dolgos, Jason, Andy, and Alison Dunn and their families. He will be missed by his beloved dogs, Minnie and Ginger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Ann Dunn; and his twin brother, Donald Dunn. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:30 to 12:30 pm on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
