Obituary

Norma M. Penuel, 89, of Hebron, passed away Monday, April 13, 2015 at Wicomico Nursing Home in Salisbury. She was born on January 26, 1926 in Quantico, a daughter of the late Oliver Mills and Louise Bounds. Norma graduated from Hebron High School in 1942. She went on to attend Salisbury University to receive a Bachelor of Science degree, the University of Maryland where she began her Master's, and Johns Hopkins where she completed her Master's in Education and received a Principal's Certificate. She began her teaching career in Anne Arundel County, and went on to teach in Fruitland and Hebron and was principal in Sharptown for four years. Norma took time off from teaching to spend time with her two young sons and later returned to Hebron to teach for 18 years, retiring in 1985. Norma enjoyed volunteering at the Hebron Carnival and was a member of the Hebron Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Hebron and the order of the Eastern Star and a longtime member of Nelson's United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, Jim Penuel, Jr. and his wife Pam of Pittsville and John Penuel and his wife Karen of Hebron; grandchildren, Jimmy Penuel and his wife Amber, Katie Penuel, John Penuel, and Brian Penuel; a great grandchild, Avery Putman; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Amos Penuel; and a sister, Marion Taylor. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove Street in Delmar. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Jim Riley will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Hebron Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 300, Hebron, MD 21830, Nelson's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 254, Hebron, MD 21830 or Bayside Chapel, 38288 London Avenue, Selbyville, DE 19975.
