Mora Irene Frerie Culver, 83, of Delmar, Maryland, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Harmony Hall Assisted Living in Columbia, MD. Born in Washington, D.C. on July 21, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Charles William Franklin Frerie and Edith Emily Spicer Frerie. She and her mother moved to Delmar, Maryland in 1958 from Silver Spring, Maryland. Upon graduation from Frederick Maryland High School in 1947, Irene went on to attend the University of Maryland in 1948, graduating from the School of Nursing in 1953. As a registered nurse she was employed both by Garfield Hospital in Washington, D.C. and Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Later, she was employed as a R.N. with Nutri-System in Salisbury for eight years, retiring in 1990. Irene was a member of the Eastern Star ADAH Chapter # 5 of Delmar, served as the 1976 chairperson of Delmar Bicentennial Committee, was the recipient of The Thirteen Original States for Delaware in 1977, and was past president of the Delmar New Century Club. The Delmar Chamber of Commerce honored her as a recipient of an award as Delmar's First Citizen of The Year in 1976. She gave a lot of herself to help others, in spite of having M.S. since 1970. Along with the love of the theatre, she directed 10 plays for Delmar, Maryland PTA and Delmar, Delaware Booster Club. She loved young people and found serving as Church School Superintendent of St. Stephen's as a real joy. She was always willing to volunteer after retirement both at PRMC and the Florida Hospital business office. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and David Borucki; and two grandsons, of whom she was very proud, Bryan and Benjamin Borucki, all of Columbia, MD. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin S. Culver. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Short Funeral Home, 13 East Grove Street, Delmar, DE. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service.
