LAUREL- Mildred Rae Hastings, 99, of Laurel, died Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at the Country Rest Home in Greenwood, with her daughter by her side. She was born August 10, 1915 in Palmyra, New Jersey, a daughter of the late Raymond B. Shedaker and Lillie Johnson Shedaker. For over 30 years Mildred owned and drove a school bus in the Laurel School District, a job she truly enjoyed. She was a long time member of the former Horsey Grove United Methodist Church. She loved the outdoors and could be found working in her vegetable garden or working in her yard. She was an excellent cook and will be remembered by many for her lemon meringue pies. . Mrs. Hastings lived in the farmhouse until she was 96. She spent 2 years at the home of her daughter in Dover and a year with her granddaughter in Hebron, MD before moving to the Greenwood Country Rest Home at the end of March. She had great strength of character and determination to overcome the obstacles that come with life. She taught many life lessons and sowed more than seeds in her garden. She is survived by a son, Clarke M. Hastings and wife, Esther of Laurel; a daughter, Virginia R. Hickman and husband, Edgar of Dover; a daughter-in-law, Laura Ann Hastings of Laurel; six grandchildren, Jay C. Hastings and wife, Nicki, Brad A. Hastings and wife, Cathy, Kimberly R. Insley and husband, Duane, Kelly M. Gondeck and husband, Dave, J. Michael Hastings and wife, Susan and Krista B. Records and husband, Chris; eight great grandchildren, Hannah, Adam, Hunter, Marcus, Erin, Holly, Jackson and Bryce; and several special nieces and nephews In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde D. Hastings; a son, Russell C. Hastings, who passed in 2006; and brothers and sisters, William B. Shedaker, J. Edward Shedaker, Metha Hastings and Lillian K. Harrison. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 1:00 to 2:00. Interment will follow in Odd Fellow's Cemetery in Laurel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Country Rest Home, 12046 Sunset Lane, Greenwood, DE 19950.
