DELMAR- Melvin H. LeCates, 73, of Delmar, died Thursday, September 22, 2011 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 5, 1937 in Laurel, a son of the late Larry and Virginia (Cox) LeCates. Mr. LeCates retired after 20 years of service as a custodian at Delmar Jr.-Sr. High School. After retirement from the school he worked for almost 20 years in construction for Delmarva Aluminum and his brother-in-law, Russell Smart. He attended various churches through the years, including First Baptist Church of Delmar, Faith Baptist Church in Delmar, and most recently attended Bayshore Community Church in Gumboro. He loved the outdoors and was an avid deer hunter. He was gifted with his hands and could fix almost anything, including automobiles for family and friends. He is survived by 3 children, Donna DeMent and her husband, Timothy of Salisbury, Larry Melvin LeCates of Delmar and Russell C. LeCates and his wife, Missy of Delmar; a daughter-in-aw, Michele Smith LeCates of Delmar; 12 grandchildren, Patty LeCates-Miller, Roland LeCates, Robbie LeCates, Danielle Delfin-Lara, Larry Melvin LeCates, Jr., Scott LeCates, Jacob LeCates, Lauren LeCates, Ryan LeCates, Russell LeCates, II, Hunter LeCates and Trey LeCates; several great-grandchildren; his former wife and mother of his children, Patricia Messick of Salisbury; and a sister, Kathleen Ethel LeCates of Snow Hill. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lee Gordy. A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 1:00 to 2:00. Pastor Lee Hughart will officiate. Interment will follow the services at St. Stephen's Cemetery Park in Delmar. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
