Melba Baker Hastings, 88, passed into heaven on August 1, 2012, after a six-year battle with multiple strokes and their complications. She was born February 4, 1924 in Delmar, Delaware. Her parents, Robert Vernon Baker and Lillie Mae Shockley, preceded her in death. Melba graduated with honors from Delmar High School. She worked throughout her adult life in various capacities as a seamstress. She was Delmar's Citizen of the Year in 1997. She was a lifelong member of Delmar First Baptist Church where she served for decades as children's and adult Sunday school teacher. For the past six years, she resided at The Village at Harbor Pointe in Salisbury. She was married to Carlton James Hastings who preceded her in death in 1968. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Carlton and Robert Baker. She has one surviving brother, Leslie Baker of Delmar. She is also survived by two children,a son, James Robert Hastings (Elaine) of Houston, Texas and a daughter, Joan Carole LesCallette (Pat) of Salisbury, Maryland. She has two grandchildren, Heather Seiber (LTC Patrick) of Manassas, VA and Timothy Hastings (Robin) of Austin, Texas. She has six great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 5, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Short Funeral Home in Delmar. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service.
