Obituary

Madeline H. Hudson, 93, of Delmar, died Friday, September 6, 2013 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin. She was born February 22, 1920 in Hagerstown, Maryland, a daughter of the late George C. and Cora Moser Herbert. Madeline graduated from Catawba College with a major in languages and minor in drama. She was offered a position teaching English to an Ambassador's children in Mexico. Her travel was arranged and she was prepared to leave when World War II broke out. Not knowing what Mexico's stance on the war was going to be, it was advised that she not travel to Mexico, leaving her disappointed for an opportunity that she so looked forward to. She then went to work for Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown during the war where she worked as a secretary to the head of Fairchild. After the war she led a drama troop across the northeast and into Canada directing plays and selling ads to fund their trip. She left Hagerstown to attend Salisbury Teachers College to earn accreditation in Elementary Education. After earning her degree she began her career in education teaching at an elementary school before moving to Delmar High, where she taught Spanish for many years. In the later stages of her career she became a guidance counselor at the high school where she worked until retirement. Madeline gave back to the community by volunteering at Peninsula Regional Medical Center for over 20 years. There was a special place in her heart for the Delmar public Library, where she volunteered for many years and was on the board of directors. She enjoyed being involved with the literacy program, helping adults learn to read and also volunteered at the Delmar high library for a number of years. For many Christmases she was "Mrs. Santa Claus" and led a group of volunteers gathering gifts to deliver to needy children and local nursing homes. She was an avid reader and a wonderful knitter. She was a long time member of St. Stephen's United Methodist Church in Delmar. She is survived by a daughter, Leslie H. Corbin of Berlin; a grandson, Christopher C. Corbin of Berlin; a sister, Clara E. Larmore of Delmar; a brother-in-law, Frederick F. Burhans of Wilmington, North Carolina; and a cousin, Martha Jane Renner of Hagerstown. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Marion C. Hudson; and a sister, Leah H. Burhans.
