DELMAR- L. Wayne Smith, 79, of Delmar, died Monday, November 14, 2016 at Davey's Assisted Living in Pocomoke, where he had resided for the past two years. He was born November 4, 1937 in Salisbury, a son of the late Edward and Lottie Smith. Mr. Smith served in the US Army from 1959-1962. He retired from Delmarva Power. He was involved in the Knights of Columbus, Delmar Lions Club and the Delmar High School band. He was very active in coaching youth sports at the Salvation Army Boy's Club, where he served as Athletic Director. His love of sports began at the age of 16 with the VFW City Industrial League as a left-handed pitcher. He was also a member of the International Association of Basketball Officials. He enjoyed college and professional football as well. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gloria Smith; a son, Thomas Smith and wife, Megan of Fruitland; grandsons, Brayden and Evan; a brother, John W. Smith and wife Ethel Ann of Forest, Virginia; a sister, Mary Virginia Carter and husband, John of Bedford, VA; a sister-in-law, Josephine Smith of Salisbury; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph and Kim DiRocco of Ft Washington, Maryland and James and Judy DiRocco of Bedford, Virginia; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews; and a lifelong friend, Ronnie Willey and wife, Joyce of Salisbury. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael W. Smith; and three brothers, Roland, Norris and James Smith. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Coastal Hospice, P.O.
