Kenneth Dryden "Bert" Gibbons 92, of Snow Hill, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Snow Hill on December 22, 1921, a son of the late H.S. Burton Gibbons and Edna Dryden Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons graduated from Snow Hill High School with the class of 1939. They were a close class that continued to gather yearly for reunions. He was drafted into the Army Air Corps on July 14, 1942, and served in the Asian Pacific as a staff sergeant, arming aircrafts during World War II. He began his career at the Snow Hill Post Office in 1946, working as a substitute clerk carrier and eventually becoming postmaster, retiring in 1976. After a very short retirement, he went to work for the Maryland Department of Social Services. After retiring from that, he worked very closely with Norman and Pat Dennis at the Dennis Funeral Home. Bert was active in many community and church organizations. He is a life member of the Snow Hill Volunteer Fire Company where he was an active member for 42 years. He is a life member of the American Legion Post # 67, where he has been a member for 69 years and is the oldest continuous member of that post. He was a past master, 32nd degree Mason and a 50 year member of the Sinepuxent Masonic Lodge 193 of Snow Hill. Other memberships included the VFW and the Snow Hill CB Association. Bert attended Whatcoat United Methodist church and recently attended Snow Hill Christian Church where the Gibbons family have been members for years. Kenneth is survived by his wife, Annie E. Gibbons of Snow Hill; a daughter, Rosellen G. Evans of Milford, Delaware; two grandchildren, Staff Sgt. Paul Evans and his wife Amie of Gaithersburg, Maryland and Laura Guido and her husband Joe of Owings, Maryland; two great-grandchildren, Addison Evans and Grant Guido; a step daughter, Shirley Olinik of Greenbush, Virginia; three step-grandchildren, Colonel Kathy Shutak and her husband Dave of New Braunfels, Texas, Judi Haynes and her husband James of Tuscon,Arizona, and Kenneth Olinik and his wife Linda of Salem,Ohio; 6 step-great grandchildren; a cousin, Walter West of Perryhawkin; and special neighbors of 40 years, Carolyn and Charlie Brown of Snow Hill. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosalie Truitt Gibbons; a sister, Gladys Gibbons; and two brothers, Eldred and Aubrey Gibbons. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 2:00 at Whatcoat United Methodist Church in Snow Hill. A visitation for family and friends will be held at the church from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Whatcoat Cemetery.
