Kenneth H. Bennett, Sr. , 96, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2023, at Delmar Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, after a brief stay. Kenny was born December 5, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late James William Bennett and Helen Darnille Bennett. As a child his family moved around until they settled in Galestown, where he learned the lessons of an honest day's work on the family farm. He proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II where he earned the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal and then re-enlisted in the US Air Force and served during the Korean War, earning the National Defense Service Medal. After returning home, Kenny settled back into family life on the Eastern Shore and enjoyed a career at Dupont from where he retired after 35 years. He was always very active in the community and was a member of the Delmar VFW Post 8276, Delmar American Legion, Delmar Kiwanis Club and the Mason-Dixon Woodworkers Club. He was the oldest known local World War II and Korean War veteran. He enjoyed gardening and will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by sons, Kenneth H. Bennett, Jr. (Lisa), George M. Bennett (Karen) and Franklin O. Bennett (Robin); beloved daughter, Jane E. Bennett; grandchildren, Sandra Bennett, Kenneth Bennett, III, Donnie Bennett, Christina Bennett Hastings, Amy Shea, Jamie Bennett, and Nikki Bounds; many great and great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Gertrude (Bowden) Bennett; grandchildren, Michele Fothergill and Whittney Bennett; brothers, Jim, Tom, Norman, Lawrence, Jerry, Walter, Robert and Ernie; and a sister, Betty Wells. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 31, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, followed by a funeral service which begins at 11:00. The Reverend David Bennett will officiate. Interment will follow at Ralph's Hill Cemetery in Delmar. In lieu of flowers, donations to help defray funeral expenses may be made to Short Funeral Home.
