Obituary

DELMAR- Dr. John L. Tyvoll, 71, of Delmar, died Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 4, 1945 in Cordova, Alaska, a son of the late Fred and Edna Tyvoll and was proud of his Norwegian heritage. John earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Southern Mississippi and was a highly regarded chemistry professor at Salisbury University. His last three years at SU he served as Department Chair. He will remembered as a consummate teacher who loved teaching and was well loved by his SU family, which includes his colleagues as well as the many students he taught along his journey. He was a real people person who never met a stranger and enjoyed the many conversations with people throughout his travels. Jamaica was a favorite destination for him and his wife, Cindy. He also enjoyed cooking, playing basketball and golf. He is survived by his wife, Cindy Hearn Tyvoll; daughters, Kristen Moore and husband, Jess of Fruitland and Kaaren Ritter and husband, Chris of Florida; grandchildren, Maggie, Caroline, Madylinn, Fiona, Camden and Crosby; brother Erik Tyvoll of Oregon; a sister, Roxanne Tyvoll of Florida; nephew, Erik Tyvoll of Oregon; mother-in-law, Jeanne Hearn of Delmar; brother-in-law, J.L. Hearn and his daughters of Annapolis; and sister-in-law, Melanie Draper and husband, Todd, and their sons, of Williamsport, Maryland. Not to be forgotten is his beloved cat, "Lucy." A celebration of John's life will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Great Hall in the Holloway Hall Building at Salisbury University, where a visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in John's memory to Salisbury University Foundation, P.O. Box 2655, Salisbury, MD 21801.
