John Herbert Stevens, 90, of Snow Hill, died Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. He was born December 27, 1921 in Snow Hill, a son of the late Arthur Leslie Stevens and Helen Boise (Marshall) Stevens. Mr. Stevens proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II with the 13th Airborne as a paratrooper. He worked at Glenn L. Martin before going into the service and returned there after his discharge. He then enrolled at Frame Refrigeration School in Baltimore before working as an appliance serviceman for Sears before opening his business, Stevens Appliance Service and the Stevens Poly-Clean Laundromat. He was a life member of Bates Memorial United Methodist Church in Snow Hill, a member of the American Legion Post 67 in Snow Hill and the Worcester County Chapter of the AARP. He truly loved the outdoors and being on the water, fishing, boating and waterskiing. He enjoyed spending time with family and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Grace Lytle Stevens; 3 children, Terri Lynn Smith and her husband, Carl, Michael Arthur Stevens and his wife, Debra and Bruce Herbert Stevens and his wife, Lorie, all of Snow Hill; 7 grandchildren, Todd Smullen, Scott Smullen, Stacy Lynn Jones, John Christopher Stevens, Matthew Stevens, Amanda Stevens and Daniel Stevens; 6 great grandchildren; and a brother, Willard Stevens and his wife, Laura of Salisbury. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Brantley Stevens and Marvin Stevens; and a sister-in-law, Marie Stevens. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Bates Memorial United Methodist Church in Snow Hill, where family and friends may call from 1:00 to 2:00. The Reverend Tina Whaley will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Bates Cemetery.
