Obituary

Joan Elizabeth Elliott Dunn, 83, passed away Friday, June 28, 2013 at Salisbury Nursing Home. She was born September 12, 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of the late Charles and Lula Elliott. Joan was raised in Ohio and graduated with the Walnut Hills High School class of 1947. She went on to attend the University of Cincinnati where she received a B.S. degree and the Murray State University where she received a M.A. degree. She did her post-graduate work at Southern Illinois University completing all but her PhD thesis. She spent six years teaching fourth, fifth and sixth grade, then went on to teach art for twenty years at Metropolis Jr. High School and Middle School. Joan enjoyed substitute teacher work for the Paducah, Kentucky branch of University of Kentucky, and Shawnee Community College in Ullin, IL. as well as substitute teaching on the Eastern Shore where she had lived for the past 18 years. Her teaching also included the Summer Arts Program at Saints Pedro y Pablo Episcopal School, in Guatemala, and a supervisor for student teachers for Southern Illinois University. She was also a frequent presenter at the teacher annual meetings sponsored by several county educational superintendents. Her community associations included working with various philanthropic societies, the Collegiate Social Sorority Delta Delta Delta at the University of Cincinnati, Zeta Chapter and the Kappa Delta Pi, executive council, Zeta Chapter; University of Cincinnati. Joan has been a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution since 1958 serving twice as local Regent in IL and once with the Seaford, DE chapter. ; a life member of the National Education Association, Illinois Education Association and the Massac County Association, lifelong member of the Methodist church, and currently a member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church in Delmar, Delaware, Charter member of Metropolis Garden Club, a prize winner in flower arranging competitions,and a member of the New Century Club and the Red Hat Society. She also enjoyed acting as hostess at the Christian Kitchen lunches at St. Stephens Methodist Church. She will be remembered for her passion for the Arts; her zest for life; her love of God, country, and family; and courage in her ongoing health struggles. She is survived by a daughter; Diane E. Litchford (Wayne) of Delmar; two sons, Charles R. Dunn (Lisa) of Huntington Beach, CA and Christopher E. Dunn (Carol) of Simpsonville, SC; ten grandchildren, James Lewis, Brett Lewis, Scott Dunn, Ryan Dunn, Paul Dunn, Olivia Dunn, Natalie Dunn, E. Brooke Benhamou (Fabien), Stephen Litchford (Dawn), and Allyson Grinnan (David); and two great- grandchildren, Grace Grinnan and Madelyn Grinnan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Charles W. Dunn. A funeral service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2013 at St. Stephens United Methodist Church in Delmar. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Reverend Phyllis Walton will officiate. In memory of Mrs. Dunn, contributions may be sent to St. Stephens United Methodist Church, 101 East State Street, Delmar, Delaware 19940.
