It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jessie A. "Jitterbug" Coleman, age 91, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, new great-great grandmother and friend, who departed this life peacefully on Saturday, July 4, 2026, Jessie was born on January 21, 1935, in Cambridge, MD, and spent her formative years in Mardela Springs, where she became the youngest of five siblings. She was a daughter of the late Sylvester Maxwell Miller, Jr. and Eunice Hannah (Lamb) Miller.
A proud graduate and valedictorian of Mardela High School's class of 1953, Jessie continued her education at Washington College, where she majored in French. Throughout her life, she maintained a passion for reading and higher education, exemplifying her belief in the value of knowledge. A devoted member of the Mardela Alumni Association, Jessie cherished her connection to her hometown and its community. She earned the nickname "Jitterbug" in her younger days due to her love for dancing and especially for her favorite dance of the same name.
Jessie's unwavering faith was central to her life; she actively attended Athol Baptist Church in Mardela, where she was involved in Bible studies and frequently shared her love for her Lord with others. A fiercely patriotic woman, she celebrated her faith, family, and country with great devotion. As a determined and independent single mother, Jessie raised her children with love and sacrifice, always striving for a better future for them.
In addition to her profound commitment to her family, Jessie enjoyed a fulfilling career as a plant accountant at Coldwater Seafood Company, where she served for 27 years. Even after retirement, her incredible work ethic shone through as she continued assisting local businesses and friends with bookkeeping and tax services until just a few years ago.
Jessie is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth DeGroat and husband, Terry; son, Dan Edmonson and significant other, Maggie Hymes; granddaughter, Dale "Daisy" Rose and husband, Josh; great granddaughter, Natalie McCollum; and great-great grandson, Maxwell Wolfgang Osborn. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jessie will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched with her strength, independence, and fierce love.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Sylvia Stalnaker and Erline Bailey; and brothers, Sylvester Maxwell Miller, III and Russell Elwood Miller.
A celebration of Jessie's life will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where a visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00. Pastor Paul James will officiate.
May her spirit continue to inspire us all as we remember her indomitable strength, unwavering faith, and the love she shared throughout her remarkable life.
Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home of Delmar.
