Obituary

Jeffery Allen Kahovec, born on July 20, 1954, in Michigan City, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home in Delmar at the age of 71 on Monday, July 28, 2025. He was a son of Eugene and Jean Kahovec. Jeff also grew up surrounded by his two brothers, Matt and Todd Kahovec. Jeff was raised in Michigan and, at just 19, made the move to Virginia. There, he dedicated his career to CSX Railroad, working as a train engineer until he retired at 65. Within the last year, he relocated to Delmar to be closer to his beloved grandchildren, who filled his days with joy. Jeff always had a curious mind. He was known for his inquisitiveness and research skills--if he wanted to know something, he'd dive deep into it. He had a passion for movies, especially enjoying the antics of the Three Stooges and the intrigue of Columbo. He was also an avid follower of politics and enjoyed tuning into Fox News, followed by a debate of its topics with his son-in-law. A smooth jazz aficionado, he often found joy in listening to favorite artists like Chris Botti. In his free time, Jeff loved to take leisurely rides with friends without any particular destination in mind. A favorite pastime was people-watching from the comfort of his Adirondack chair, especially during rainstorms when the world slowed down just a bit. He is survived by his beloved daughter Kelly Phillips and her husband Corey, as well as his cherished grandchildren, Reese and Sloan, who brought him immense joy. Jeff also held several life-long and career-long friends, whose camaraderie brought him happiness. His lifelong buddy Ken Dudiak was a friend since kindergarten, sharing memories that have lasted a lifetime. Bob Lasota, a career-long friend, later became a lake-house friend that Jeff enjoyed spending relaxing days with after retirement. He also maintained a close bond with Willie Carter, Jim Molter, and Al Vasta, who enriched his life with calls and outings. In honoring his wishes, no formal services will be planned. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, an organization of which he supported or Compassionate Care. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.shortfh.com.
