Obituary

Jeanette Elizabeth Nash Clevenger, 93, of Chester, formerly of Grasonville, passed on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Heartland House Assisted Living Facility in Grasonville, where she had been a resident for the past month. Jeanette was born June 1, 1918 in Chester, a daughter of the late Robert Ephriam Nash, Sr. and Jeannette Elizabeth Samm Nash. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Franklin Clevenger, who passed in 1982, 4 brothers, Ed, Robert, William and Orville; and her son-in-law, Thomas C. "Bucky" Jewell, Sr. She grew up in a large, hard working farm family and graduated from Stevensville High School with the class of 1935. She married her sweetheart, Bill, on Christmas Day in 1939 and shared 43 years of marriage with him before his death in 1982. In addition to being a homemaker for many years, Jeanette started working right after high school as a seamstress for the Perfect Garment Factory in Grasonville and also later worked at South's Store. In 1968 she went to work for the State of Maryland as a fiscal clerk in the income tax division, and retired after 14 years of service. Jeanette was baptized as a child in Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville and after marriage joined the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Grasonville where she was a long time member and enjoyed singing in the choir. For many years she was the treasurer of the building fund and helped raise money for the church consolidation. She was a wonderful cook and an excellent seamstress who made garments for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Christmas at her home was always a special time as she took many steps to always make the holiday special with her family and friends. She also loved to dance and was an original member of the Kent Island Yacht Club and a charter member of the Pythian Sisters. She is survived by 2 daughters, Karen Janeen Clevenger Jewell and Kathy Darlene Clevenger Jones and her husband, Bruce, all of Chester; 4 grandchildren, Christy Ward, Tom Jewell and his wife, Amy, Greg Jewell and his wife, Kimberly and Cory Jones; 6 great grandchildren, Amy, Carlye, Tyler, Emily, Liam and Lyla; and 3 great-great grandchildren, Ronnie, Carter and Haylie. She is also survived by a sister, Margaret Whittle of Baltimore and many nieces, nephews and a host of extended family members and friends. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 and from 6:00 to 8:00 at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Grasonville, where funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Oscar Lopez will officiate. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Easton. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Immanuel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 518, Grasonville, MD 21638.
