It is with a mix of sadness and deep gratitude that we announce the passing of Janis Hickman Burbage, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and cherished friend, who left us peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on January 20, 1938, in Frankford, Delaware, Janis was a daughter of the late Ollie and Mattie (Bishop) Hickman. She lived a life filled with love, warmth, and dedication to her family. In her younger years, Janis worked in several local restaurants, but her most important job was being a devoted homemaker, nurturing her four children and family with unwavering love and support. Her legacy is one of kindness and resilience, as she created a home that served as a sanctuary for her family and many friends. She had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel welcome, sharing her love of cooking, laughter, and storytelling. Her family will certainly remember her chicken and dumplings and other family favorites and her love for flowers and gardening. Janis will also be remembered fondly for her faith and her long-time membership at Melsons Methodist Church in Delmar, where she served with the Methodist Women's Group. She was also a member of the Wicomico Chapter No. 91, Order of the Eastern Star in Salisbury. She is survived by her children, Debbie Jean Tyler (John), Joan Kelly Burbage, Jane Karen White (Kevin) and John David Burbage, Jr. (Darcy); grandchildren, Beth Tyler, Amy Somers, David Tyler, Kelly West and Kevin White, Jr.; great grandchildren, Bryce Tyler, Maci Tyler, Levi Somers, Ainsley Somers, Mckenzie Tyler, Ella West and Scarlet West; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Reverend John David Burbage, Sr., her second husband, Herbert Burbage, and her many siblings, Violet Rickards, Maude Murray, Delmus Hickman, Elisha Hickman, Donald Hickman, Jack Hickman, Ollie Hickman, Jr., and William Kelly. In celebration of Janis's life, a visitation will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends can come together to share memories and honor her incredible journey. Following the visitation, a graveside service will be held at Melson's Cemetery at 12:30 p.m., where Janis will be laid to rest.
