Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Howard Willey Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, who left us peacefully at the age of 93 on Monday, November 2, 2026. Born on June 26, 1933, Jim was a son of the late Howard E. Willey and Elizabeth Spear-Willey. He lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a love for sports.

Jim grew up in Vienna, Maryland, where he developed a passion for athletics, playing both basketball and football during his high school years. He graduated from Cambridge High School with the class of 1951 and went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955, where he continued to play football and further honed his leadership skills. After his military service, Jim embarked on a remarkable career in law enforcement, becoming a Maryland State Trooper. He served steadfastly in this role from 1956 until his retirement in 1976, earning the respect and admiration of his community and colleagues. He then went on to serve with the Wicomico County Sheriff's Department.

Jim's love for sports extended beyond his youth; he enjoyed golfing with his brothers, Jonathan and Bill, and was an avid fan of the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles. While a hole-in-one for a golfer is quite a feat, Jim carded 6 of them over his lifetime, something he was quite proud of. He cherished the time spent with family and friends playing golf. Also, he was passionate about umpiring for many years, contributing to the development of young athletes in his community.

He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Joanne Horseman Willey; his sons, James Willey Jr. (Joann) and Warren Willey; his daughter, Amy Marvin (Joe); grandchildren, JT Willey, Jessie Day, Jacob Somers, and Jonathan Osowiecki; great-grandchild, Mason Somers; his brother, Pastor Jonathan Willey (Linette); his sisters, Elois Payne (Dick Willey) and Rose Whayland. In addition top his parents, James was preceded in death by a brother, William (Bill) Willey and sister-in-law Dolores Willey.

The family would like to recognize Jim's niece Jennifer Rayne, who along with his daughter provided loving care for him in his final days.

Funeral services will be held at the Abundant Life Worship Center in Salisbury, Maryland on November 14, 2026 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Jim may be directed to Abundant Life Worship Center, located at 6070 Hobbs Rd, Salisbury, MD 21804.

Jim Willey will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. His legacy of service, commitment, and love for family will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
