It is with heavy hearts yet profound gratitude for a well-lived life that we announce the passing of James Frazier Tyler Sr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great grandfather and friend. Jim passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 31, 2026, after a courageous battle with multiple illnesses. He was 81 years old.
Jim was a living example of how curiosity, discipline, and a love for truth shaped his Christian faith. His decision to return to college later in life and to keep reading, researching, and studying the Bible until recent months shows that learning is not confined only to youth or in formal classrooms; it’s a lifelong journey that deepens wisdom and strengthens faith.
Born on March 27, 1945, in the charming town of Cambridge, Maryland, Jim was the beloved son of the late Sherwood and Myrtle Tyler. Adopted as an infant and raised in a nurturing environment, he grew up alongside his grandparents, Sadie and Freemont Frazier, and his Aunt Ruth and Uncle Arther, who all played vital roles in shaping the remarkable man he became. He grew up with family as the central part of his life, learning how to hunt, fish, garden, crab, and gather oysters while he learned on his father’s workboat.
Jim was a man of deep faith and conviction, devoting his life to the service of others. A graduate of Cambridge High School in 1964, he ultimately pursued higher education at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, followed by further studies at Nasua Bible College in Florida. His academic journey equipped him with the knowledge and passion to embark on a fulfilling career in ministry. For over 25 years, Jim served with unwavering dedication as a Youth Pastor, Associate Pastor, Christian School Administrator, and Pastor, spreading the teachings of the Bible and offering guidance to countless individuals. His journey in faith was further enriched by his active membership in various churches, where he was known for his devout study of the scriptures.
Before his call to the ministry, Jim worked as a machinist at Dupont in Seaford, Delaware, where he honed additional skills in construction and electrical work. These talents, combined with his profound biblical knowledge, were gifts he generously shared with both his family, friends, and his greater community.
Jim was first married to his late wife, Linda Sue Tyler (d. 2015) for 33 wonderful years. He was also preceded in death by a child lost before birth, a loss he now finds comfort in being reunited with in heaven. Jim later found love again with Virginia Tyler, with whom he shared 10 beautiful years. Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Virginia; his children, Jenny Lee Daniels, James Frazier Jr. (Teresa), John Wesley (Alice), Jason Paul (Misty), Joel Lawrence (Jamie), Becky(Jason) Bratten, John (Will) Mitchell, and David Mitchell. His legacy continues through his 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Each of them carries forward the values of hard work and love that Jim instilled in them throughout his 81 years.
In his spare time, Jim found joy in studying the Bible and cherishing moments with his family. His warmth, wisdom, and unwavering faith were a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion that will continue to inspire future generations.
James Frazier Tyler Sr. will be remembered for his compassionate spirit, steadfast faith, and the profound impact he had on the lives he touched. As we celebrate his life, we find solace in the knowledge that he is now at peace, embraced by the love of those who have gone before him.
A service honoring Jim's life will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 11:00 am at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, DE, where family and friends will gather to remember and celebrate the remarkable journey of a truly extraordinary man. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10-11:00 am. Following the service, interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park in Cambridge. Rest in peace, dear James, knowing that your legacy of faith and love will forever light our path until we meet in Heaven.
