DELMAR- James C. Callaway, Jr., 87, of Delmar, went home to be with his Lord & Savior on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Hospice of the Chesapeake in Severna Park, Maryland. He was born June 3, 1929 in Laurel, Delaware, the eldest son of the late J. Carlton Callaway, Sr. and Helen Hastings Callaway. Jim graduated from Laurel High School with the class of 1947, before he proudly served his country in the Delaware National Guard/Army Reserves for 27 years. He graduated from Command & General Staff College in 1973 & retired with the rank of Major. He held several positions at the DuPont Nylon Plant in Seaford, Delaware, from where he retired after 44 years as a Sr. Technical Assistant and Development Assistant. During his time at DuPont he worked in the Spinner Department and worked almost 18 years of shiftwork before serving several years in R&D. For many years he represented his fellow employees as a non-exempt employee of the SNEC. After retirement he worked for over 20 years as a school bus driver and contractor alongside of his late wife, Evelyn. In his younger days he was a an active member of Melson's United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities and more recently was a member of Living Stones Church in Salisbury, where he also actively served on several committees and duties. He was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his son, Brett Callaway and his wife, Ann of Salisbury & their children, Jonathan & Jennifer; his daughter, Karen Muessig & her husband, Scott of Severna Park & their children, Pierce, Micah & James; brothers, William, Charles and Kenneth; and several nieces, nephews & cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn Layfield Callaway, who passed in 2012; sisters, Thelma Hutcheson, Betty Grazela and Doris Fry and a brother, Robert. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Living stones Church in Salisbury, where a visitation will begin at 12:00 noon. Pastor David Hudson will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Melson's Cemetery in Delmar. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Living Stones Church, 31695 Winterplace Parkway, Salisbury, MD 21804.
