Obituary

SNOW HILL- James Thomas Bynum, Sr., 87, of Snow Hill, died Sunday, November 20, 2011 at John B. Parsons Home in Salisbury. He was born March 2, 1924 in Latimer County, Oklahoma, a son of the late William Charles Bynum and Artie Marie (Harris) Boone. Mr. Bynum started his military service with the Seabee's before proudly serving his country in the US Navy during World War II. He started his work with NASA as an Aerospace Engineering Technician at the Chincoteague Missile Base. From there he transferred to the Indian Head Missile Base before moving back to the shore to finish his 30 year career at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Wallops Island. He loved traveling to antique car shows and cruise-ins and working in his vegetable garden. He cherished times spent with his family and enjoyed weekend dinners and cookouts with family. He is survived by 4 children, James Thomas Bynum, Jr and his wife, Holly of Pittsville, Linda Kaye Donoway of Girdletree, Teresa Belle Schnepel and her husband, Stephen of Girdletree and Stephen Charles Bynum and his wife, Jo Ellen of Girdletree; 7 grandchildren, Lisa R. Donoway of Salisbury, Jessica Mae Bynum of Sterling, VA, James Thomas Bynum, III of Pittsville, Stephen E. Schnepel of Girdletree, Helen Elizabeth Bynum, Victoria Grace Bynum and Margaret Annelise Bynum, all of Girdletree; a great grandson, James Thomas Bynum, IV of Pittsville; two half-sisters, Mary Elizabeth Schwindt of Timken, Kansas and Linda Sue Boone of Hays, Kansas; and 3 sisters-in-law, Pauline Laws, Betty West and Mary West, all of Snow Hill. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret West Bynum, who passed in 2002; a sister, Dorothy Bynum Hooper; a son-in-law, Richard Donoway; and a step-father, Wayne G. Boone; and a good buddy from his Navy days, Lavearn Weichmann. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2011 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Spence Baptist Church in Snow Hill, followed by a graveside service at Spence Baptist Church Cemetery. Pastor Kenneth Elligson will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Spence Baptist Church, 4824 Paw Paw Creek Road, Snow Hill, MD 21863.
