Obituary

J. Amos Penuel, 87, of Hebron, passed Friday, March 4, 2011 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. He was born at home in Delmar on September 4, 1923, a son of the late John J. and Hattie Brewington Penuel. Amos proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army-Air Force during World War II, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Argon Forest. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post 237 in Hebron, a member of the Salisbury VFW, a past member of the Hebron Volunteer Fire Department and a member of Nelson's United Methodist Church. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Masonic Lodge 170 in Mardela Springs, where just last year he was honored to receive his 60-year pin. He was also a long time member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, where he served as Grand Tall in 1979. Amos worked 37 years as a PBX System Tech for C&P Telephone installing phone systems in large institutions and businesses such as Salisbury University, Delmarva Power and Peninsula Regional Medical Center before retiring in 1984. When he was younger, Amos loved the outdoors and could be found hunting or fishing any chance he got. He took a lot of pride in his large vegetable gardens and enjoyed sharing his vegetables with many of his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Norma Mills Penuel; two sons, Jim Penuel, Jr. and his wife, Pam of Powellville and John Penuel and his wife, Karen of Hebron; four grandchildren, Jimmy Penuel of Sharptown, Katie Putman and her husband, Greg of Salisbury, John Penuel of Hebron and Brian Penuel of Hebron; a great grandson, Avery Putman; and a sister, Eva Evans of Delmar. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Hugh and Bill Penuel and six sisters, Margaret Neal, Irene Benson, Ruth Hastings, Catherine Ward, Amy Phillips and Leila Jones. A Masonic service will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at Short Funeral Home, Delmar, where family and friends may call from 12:00 to 1:00. The Reverend Jay Hurley will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Springhill Memory Gardens near Hebron. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Coastal Hospice, P.O.
