Obituary

Hugh Oakley, 82, of Salisbury, and formerly of Freehold, New Jersey, passed away on Friday, October 30, 2009 at his home. He was born on July 17, 1927, in Spring Lake, New Jersey, the son of the late Walter Smith Oakley and Mary Elizabeth Reid Oakley. He graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1950. He began his career with the New Jersey Department of Agriculture and later went to work as a fruit broker for Blue Goose Growers in Hagerstown, Maryland. He served on the Freehold Township Board of Education in Freehold, New Jersey for 20 years, 16 of those as President. He also served as an elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Freehold. Hugh was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Salisbury. He and his wife enjoyed traveling the world. He was very proud of his family. He is survived by his wife, Marion W. Oakley; a son, William Oakley and his wife Kathleen of Savannah, Georgia; two daughters, Jeanne Dwiggins and her husband Dale, and Wendy Kemmet and her husband Richard both of Salisbury; six grandchildren, Jason Oakley and his wife Jessica, Megan Oakley and her husband Matthew Barner, Colleen Tull and her husband Fred, Kristen Kemmet, Brian Kemmet, and Jennifer Dwiggins; three great grandchildren, Lauren Oakley, Jane Oakley, and Jacob Barner. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, November 2, 2009 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Jackson Memorial Building with light refreshments. The memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of Trinity United Methodist Church in Salisbury. The Reverend William Kniceley and the Reverend George R. Patterson will officiate. A graveside memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Old Tennent Cemetery in Tennent, New Jersey. In memory of Mr. Oakley contributions may be sent to the Marion and Hugh Oakley Foundation, 603 Indian Lane, Salisbury, MD 21801. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
