DELMAR- Howard Joseph Culver, 67, of Delmar, died Friday, January 7, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 29, 1943 in Georgetown, a son of the late Minos "Mike" Culver and Clara Short Culver. Howard spent his youth in Georgetown and graduated from Georgetown High School with the class of 1961. After high school, he earned his Bachelor's Degree from Shepherd College. He started his career in education in 1966 as a Physical Education Teacher at Delmar Elementary. He then went on to Delmar Junior-Senior High school where he taught Life Science classes for 27 years and was a Guidance Counselor for many years. He loved coaching and from 1966-69 he served as the head coach to the Delmar High School basketball team and also served as the head coach for the football team from 1970-73. In addition to teaching and coaching, he was also Delmar's Athletic Director for a number of years. Later in his career he returned to the football team as an assistant coach. He attended Christ United Methodist Church in Salisbury where he eagerly supported the homeless project in the church. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Donna Marie Elliott Culver; two daughters, Laura Culver of Salisbury and Stacy Culver Kuczenski and her husband, Donald of Delmar; a grandson, William Monroe Kuczenski; mother-in-law, Dollie Eleanor Elliott of Delmar; sister-in-law, Suzanne Elliott Killian of Delmar; niece, Katie Killian Willey and her children, Abby and Stosh of Delmar; and nephew, Sean Killian and his wife April and their son, Scott of Chesapeake, Virginia. He is also survived by many other members of his extended family. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, January 10, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and also Tuesday, January 11, 2011 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where a service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Bill Green will officiate. Interment will follow the services at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar.
