Obituary

Herman James Fletcher passed away peacefully on Monday, January 1, 2024 after a short illness. Born on November 4, 1925 at his family home in Sharptown, he was the son of the late Harry and Lottie Fletcher, one of six children. At the age of 14 he went to work for Margaret M. Rider farms in their dairy and farm operations. He continued to work and live on the farm until he retired from farming and his death. During his younger years Herman was associated with several forms of racing. He was a crew member with Nibblet Auto Racing (stock car team). He was also a crew member on the Bill Rittner Race Team, where he built and maintained the racing motors. He built the engine for the "WAWA2" racing boat driven by Skeeter Johnson of Cambridge and won several national championships. Herman was an antique car collector with his favorite being his 1927 Model "T" that won him a national championship. He was a lifetime member of several antique car clubs, and a lifetime member of Sharptown Volunteer Fire Department, where he always kept the motors running at the ferris wheel and merry-go round at the Sharptown Fireman's Carnival. He was also a member of Mt. Vernon Church in Sharptown. Herman is survived by a sister, Edna M. Silvia of Sharptown; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thomas, Ted and Ned Fletcher; sister, Una Bradd; and his lifelong companions, Homer and Margaret Rider. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 6, 2023 at the Sharptown Firemen's Memorial Building. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in Firemen's Cemetery in Sharptown. In memory of Mr. Fletcher memorial contributions may be sent to the Sharptown Volunteer Fire Department, P.O.
