Henry Thomas "Tom" Shelly, Sr., age 92, of Delmar, formerly of Fallsington, PA, passed Friday, September 21, 2007, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Delmar. Tom was born on October 9, 1914 in Roger Springs, Tennessee, a son of the late John Henry Shelly and Cassie Mae Shelly. Tom proudly served his country in the United States Navy for over 22 years, serving during WWII and the Korean Wars. As a Retired Full Commander, he supported and belonged to many veterans' organizations and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Tom also retired after 35 years of service with the Unites States Postal Service, holding many positions, including Postmaster and Superintendent of Mail. After spending most of his life in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, he moved to the Eastern Shore 6 years ago to be closer to the family that he loved spending time with. He enjoyed daily walks in the Centre at Salisbury. Gardening was also a favorite hobby of Tom's and he could grow almost anything. He is survived by his two daughters, Carole Ann Bubas and her husband, Alex, of Delmar and Elizabeth Leigh Dunn and her husband, Jim, of Mardela Springs; a son, Henry Thomas Shelly, Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of League City, Texas; 9 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Gladys Moore of Palms, California and Elizabeth Moore of Bradenton, Florida. Many nieces and nephews also survive him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Roma Louise Barnett Shelly, who passed in 2001; 3 brothers, Charles, John and Clifton; and a sister, Marguerite. A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 24, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove Street, Delmar, where family and friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00. The Reverend Sam McWilliams will officiate. Interment with military honors will be held at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron.
