Helen B. Quarles, 82, of Snow Hill, died Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born March 28, 1926 in Troutville, VA, a daughter of the late Albie Curtis Bryant and Zerma (Ripley) Bryant. Mrs. Quarles enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her family. As an active member of Spence Baptist Church in Snow Hill, she sang in the choir and attended Sunday School classes. She loved reading and bird watching. She was well known by all who loved her for her delicious cakes and cookies. She had a love for life and expressed it through her sense of humor, always making people laugh. She is survived by a daughter, Susan D. Quarles of Landover, MD; a son, Steven A. Quarles and his wife Pat, of Christchurch, New Zealand; a beloved grandson, Jason A. Quarles of Landover, MD; a sister, Lorraine Bower and her husband Wesley, of Roanoke, VA; a nephew, Michael Bower and his wife Susan of Nags Head, NC; a wife of her late nephew, Betty Bower of Blue Ridge, VA; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a dear friend, Margaret Hall of Snow Hill, MD. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Lewis E. Quarles, who passed December 15, 2001 and a nephew Ramey Bower. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Spence Baptist Church in Snow Hill. The Reverend Kenneth D. Elligson will officiate. Interment will follow at Spence Baptist Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to: Coastal Hospice, P.O.
