Obituary

Harvey E. "Butch" Baker, 63, of Delmar, died Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury after a brief illness. He was born March 13, 1950 in Salisbury, a son of the late Raymond E. Baker, Sr. and Rose Veronica (Smith) Baker. Butch, as he was known to those who loved him, proudly served his country in the US Army from 1969-1971. He spent time training in Germany where he learned valuable electrical skills. Following his discharge from the Army he used skills learned there to become an accomplished electrician. Through the years he worked various jobs until he found his niche working as the Pantry Supervisor at the Joseph House in Salisbury, a job he truly enjoyed for the last 10 years. He was always there for family and friends when needed, always putting other's needs in front of his own. He was very good working with his hands and could build or fix almost anything. He enjoyed family camping trips and looking for a deal at local auctions and sales. He is survived by his faithful companion of 18 years, Shelly A. Mercie; children, Robert "Robbie" Harding Baker of Pennsylvania, William "Billy" Baker of Texas, Kimberly Walker and her husband, Shawn of New Jersey, Wade K. Mercie of Seaford and Wendy Reynolds of Delmar; a special grandson who he raised as his own, Alex; 19 additional grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Rose Anna Moore of Delmar, Helene Gilbert and her husband, Harry of Delmar and Lois Mae McAllister of Milford; and a brother, Raymond E. Baker, Jr. and his wife, Teresa of New Hampshire. He is also survived by Shelly's mother, Sandra Gibson of Seaford and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 20, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at Short funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 10:30 to 11:30. The Reverends Phyllis Walton and Chuck Reynolds will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro. Memorial contributions may be made in Butch's memory to the Joseph House Little Sisters, P.O. Box1755, Salisbury, MD 21802. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home of Delmar.
