Harold Stanley Shiles, age 93, of Mardela Springs, passed peacefully on the evening of Friday, October 19, 2007 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. He was born on September 29, 1914 in Sharptown, a son of the late John T. and Lillie Mae Robinson Shiles. Mr. Shiles loved his country and showed his pride while serving in the US Army during WWII in the 29th Infantry Division, where he earned his Purple Heart, Silver Star and various other decorations for his service. After his discharge from the service, he worked on the farm with his uncle for a short time. He also worked for Red Star Bus Co. and R.E. Powells, and retired in 1976 after 25 years of service with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co. Harold was the last surviving member of the Snethen Church Building Committee of 1940-1943 and a long time member and Trustee of Snethen United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the DAV Delmar, the VFW Post 8276 in Delmar, and a member of the American Legion in Hebron. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who enjoyed family time, especially watching ball games of the grandchildren. He was a handyman to many and was known to be able to fix almost anything. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Sadie Wilson Shiles; 2 daughters, Carolyn Groton and her husband, Johnny of Pace, Florida and Jeannie Lloyd of Delmar; a son, Milton Shiles of Mardela Springs; 7 grandchildren, Ronnie Groton and Christine Groton, both of Florida, Michele Jones of Delmar, Richard Lloyd of Kentucky, Christopher Lloyd of South Carolina, Kory Shiles of Mardela Springs and Dustin Shiles of Sharptown; and 7 great grandchildren, Hanah, Gabriela, Ethan, Evan, Alex, Alexa and Bryce. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son; three brothers, Arthur, Rodney and Howard; a sister, Elsie Mae; and a son-in-law, Gene Lloyd. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove Street, Delmar. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Snethen United Methodist Church in Mardela Springs, where friends may call from 1:00 to 2:00. Interment with military honors will be held at Firemen's Cemetery in Sharptown.
