Obituary

On Saturday, May 5, 2012, Harold Webster Dailey went home to be with the Lord Jesus, passing away at his home in Delmar, MD. He was born in Frankfort, KY, on April 5, 1920, to the late Duard and Laura Webster Dailey. He was preceded in death by his brother, Louis Dailey of Louisville, KY. Harold was a decorated World War II veteran, serving with the United States Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945, leaving with the rank of Master Sergeant. Upon his discharge, Harold returned to his native Kentucky and the family farm until taking a manager's position with Southern States in 1946. He was transferred to Salisbury in 1948 where he served as Plant Superintendent until the plant was sold in 1950. Harold worked for Montgomery Wards as their Plumbing Department Manager where he met the love of his life, Shirley Coffin; and they were married in 1955. Harold left Wards and started his own Sawdust, Shavings and Poultry business in 1954. Southern States hired Harold back in 1957, serving as a chicken doctor, salesman and supervisor. In 1962, Harold went to work for Atlantic Richfield Company (later ARCO), serving with them for 18 years until taking retirement in 1980. Harold also served as Administrator of the Salisbury Moose Lodge from 1976 until retiring permanently in 1990. Harold was very active in sports throughout his lifetime. In 1938, during his senior year at Lafayette High School in Lexington, he made All-Conference Guard in basketball. Upon arriving on the Delmarva Peninsula, Harold served as manager and player of the VFW softball team in the Salisbury Industrial League from 1949 to 1959. He also served as head coach and player for the VFW basketball team in the Eastern Shore League from 1950 to 1955. Harold managed the Lions baseball team of Salisbury East Little League from 1956 to 1968, during which he became the first manager ever from the Eastern Shore to win the state championship. Their dream of going to the Little League World Series ended with a hard-fought, one-run loss in the Little League Eastern Regional Championships. He managed several softball teams in the Wicomico County Fast Pitch Softball League before retiring from active coaching. Shortly after his retirement, he was elected to the City Industrial Sports Hall of Fame at the Wicomico Civic Center. Harold was an avid golfer who participated in the Elks Senior Golf League, winning many awards. His favorite sports teams were the Kentucky Wildcats (basketball) and the Cincinnati Reds (baseball). Over the last ten years of his life, he participated in a local Fantasy Baseball League, winning his second League Championship last year at the age of 91. Harold was a member of the St. Andrews United Methodist Church of Salisbury and Grace and Peace Fellowship Church in Delmar, MD, where he served as church trustee. Harold held numerous church leadership positions during his lifetime of service. Harold was a member of numerous civic and community organizations including the Salisbury Elks Club, VFW, American Legion, Salisbury Moose Lodge, and the Red Men. During Harold's lifetime, he received many awards, certificates and letters of appreciation for his civic activities.
